MAPPING YOUR ASCENT

Own Your Employability

Where and how you are employed is totally up to you. It’s your responsibility to develop your skills, gain expertise, research and investigate the company you might work for, understand its values, culture and mission.

While often the pace and direction of your career advancement and success is measured and decided by your manager, you have the empowerment and responsibility to understand the direction and strategy of your company, its competitors, and define the skills necessary today and in the future to meet your job’s requirements. You must ensure your skills—today and tomorrow—are aligned with the needs of the company you work for, and those of the related industry.

Companies are continually seeking ways to enhance shareholder value which simply means they are finding new revenue sources, eliminating unsuccessful businesses, closing departments to reduce expenses, finding more efficient ways to execute business often resulting in job elimination. Companies are organizations—not people—that have responsibility to their shareholders and owners to enhance value. They also give priority to their clients in providing the best and most appropriate services and products that meet their client’s needs. Adding and enhancing value means continual CHANGE which means that your skills—and employability—must constantly be upgraded to meet the needs of these changes.

The best companies also prioritize the needs and professional development of their employees. A company’s culture, operating model, benefits, perks, training and values will be attractive to you as an employee. Take advantage of their in house training, executive coaching, seminars and opportunities to explore and try new responsibilities. Take advantage of attending outside evening classes to advance your skills and knowledge.

Taking advantage of what your company offers in growing your skills and expertise is taking responsibility to “own your employability”. Do now wait for others or your company to assume what is your personal responsibility in managing your employability!
